Kretschmer wants to have the upper limit laid down in the Basic Law – Oops Top

Especially in Saxony, the soul of the people is boiling due to the increasing number of refugees this year. Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) complains about the lack of admission capacities and integration options. Now he is calling for the introduction of a nationwide upper limit for asylum seekers.

Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer continues to urge the federal government to take consistent action on the issue of asylum. On Friday he campaigned for an annual upper limit for the influx of migrants. Compared to the ZDF he explained:

“In the years 2015 and after, we reached a consensus with each other (…) that the limit is somewhere around 200,000 people that we can easily integrate here.”

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, around 244,000 applications for asylum were made in Germany last year. This year, by April alone, there were more than 110,000 applications. By the end of the year it could be well over 300,000. Kretschmer had advocated cutting social benefits for asylum seekers. The parties of the “traffic light coalition” did not understand this. Kretschmer emphasized:

“We want to show solidarity, but we are reaching the limits of what is possible”

Saxony’s Prime Minister is assuming that there will be 400,000 to 500,000 asylum applications by the end of the year. In this context, Kretschmer referred to the lack of housing and German courses. In addition, the integration at the schools does not work, said the Prime Minister.

The federal government must act now, even if this requires an amendment to the Basic Law. He said: “And if this requires a change in the law, then you have to do it.” It is clear that Germany will “also in the future be a country that will help people who are entitled to asylum”.

Kretschmer also spoke out in favor of better securing the EU’s external borders. It was “right” to organize the asylum procedures at the EU’s external border, he said, referring to the initiative by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD). Germany has always slowed down on this topic. “Germany must act,” demanded Kretschmer.

On Thursday, he tweeted on the subject:

“We need a new asylum compromise. The last major cross-party constitutional change was 30 years ago. The Prime Ministers, together with the municipal family, have repeatedly come to the conclusion that things can’t go on like this.”

In 2015, the then Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) declared with regard to the reception of the refugees who came via the so-called “Balkan route”: “We can do it!” In that year alone, 890,000 refugees came to Germany. At the time, Michael Kretschmer was deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.

State elections are due in Saxony in the second half of next year. According to current polls, the AfD, which is critical of asylum, is the strongest party with 32 percent of the possible votes, just ahead of Kretschmer’s CDU with 31 percent.
