Revealing hidden beauty

Energy. Space. Light. Imaginative details and practical art. Or also an experimental laboratory that tests combinations of options, colors and different materials. Or in another way – living with a central block in which something has been hidden. This is how one could describe the renovation of an apartment in a Prague apartment building, built in the spirit of functionalism, behind which architect Martina Homolková from the Malfinio studio.

Where the kitchen and bathrooms hid

As time went by, the apartment also changed, so it first had to be cleaned of the impractical deposits of the past. An exceptionally open space has been created that flows around central furniture block. It contained a kitchen, two bathrooms, technical rooms and a wardrobe. Check out the photos to see how the surfaces of the block made of MDF boards served as a painting canvas. There is also a subtle use of pink in the painting, this color was used in various transformations elsewhere in the apartment.

Color mixing

The pink reference is mixed with the apricot and blush colors used on the linen curtains surrounding the bed in the bedroom. However, so that the subtlety is not too much, it hangs above the bed the Black Luzy lamp in the form of a glove and a work by photographer Bet Orten on the wall. The spaces enclosed in the central block change in color, from a shade of darker brick to terracotta and also black.

Soft and raw

Subtle pink gains richness and appeal in the raspberry color used to upholster the iconic Togo sofa. He designed it more than fifty years ago Michel Ducaroy. To some, it may resemble a squeezed tube of toothpaste, to others, a caterpillar.

Comfortable and timeless seating cannot be overlooked even in the company of metal on the shelf wall, together with wood and glass. Just metal is used to a greater extent in this apartment, its rawness is supposed to balance the color delicacy. These are metals with different surface treatments, such as leached aluminum, heated stainless steel or armored sheet metal, used on furniture according to the author’s designs.

Flowing with a joke

The large open space that winds around the central furniture module is unified by a floor cement screed. And it is refreshed by several playful elements. In addition to the lamp-glove in the bedroom, it is a hanging hammock supporting relaxation in the air or gymnastic rings. Both elements are located behind the kitchen and dining room. Would the intention?
