He was the second of eight children of Eugenio Garza Sada, a key figure in Monterrey’s industry. His family played a key role in founding Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, now a part of Heineken, and laid the foundation for significant industrial entities like Alfa and Vitro. Garza Lagüera was actively engaged in various enterprises, notably within Femsa, overseeing Coca-Cola Femsa (KOF), Latin America’s largest beverage corporation, and the Oxxo convenience store chain, marking his entry into the business world. His educational journey took him through the Colegio Franco Mexicano, the Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Chaminade College in St. Louis, Missouri. Later in his career, he presided over Grupo Pulsar, expanding its portfolio to encompass diverse businesses such as Cigarrera La Moderna, Seguros Comercial América, and Luxor Mohawk, and subsequently ventured into transgenic crop cultivation through Savia. Renowned for his philanthropy, Garza Lagüera supported institutions like the Hospital Universitario and the Hogar Ortigosa, an association aiding economically disadvantaged girls in their personal and professional development for over a century. Acknowledging his contributions, the Acton Institute honored him with the Guardian of Freedom award in March 2020.
