Dieter Hallervorden reveals the causes of his addiction

Serious and very personal insights from Dieter Hallervorden. The actor opens up about why he was addicted to pills for decades.

Dieter Hallervorden thrilled audiences not only on stage, but also in films such as “Honey in the Head” or “My Friend, Disgust” – often particularly through his funny manner. In his biography “Hallervorden – A Comedian Gets Serious” he reported today 88-year-old also talks about the dark sides of his career in 2021. About a year-long addiction to pills. He will now talk about this again in an interview.

“Work can be stressful”

The TV star now explains to RTL how he became addicted back then. “The job can be stressful because you’re always under pressure to succeed and don’t want to disappoint the audience.” Hallervorden explains that he took his problems to bed with him. He further emphasizes that his “memory merry-go-round” at that time “could no longer be endured.”

The result for Hallervorden: massive sleep disorders, which he tried to combat with the help of sleeping pills. A fatal mistake, as he now knows: “I took a drug that you should only take for a maximum of six weeks and I took it for over 20 years. Then it is clear that at some point the body will say: ‘Stop!'”

In order to combat his addiction, Didi Hallervorden sought professional help and went into rehab for two weeks. His therapist showed him “what ways out” there were. Today he feels “very well” because he is off the medication. He can now “enjoy his days and nights better.”

His wife Christiane supported him during the difficult times. The actor and the former stuntwoman have been in a relationship since 2015. The couple tied the knot in Berlin in June 2022. Hallervorden has four adult children from two previous marriages.
