On Tuesday at 7 a.m., the Malmbanan opens again.

“It feels enormously good that we are finally starting to approach the finish line in this giant project. Everyone involved who worked on the restoration has made a heroic effort and toiled in both cold, snow and gale force winds,” says Simon Sunna, section manager railway, at the Swedish Transport Administration.

It is only for freight traffic which Malmbanan opens. Passenger traffic is only allowed to open after the Swedish Transport Administration assesses that the tracks have been finally adjusted.

“As far as passenger traffic is concerned, it is the most sensitive to disturbances, therefore we cannot allow passenger traffic yet. We don’t want to be forced into evacuations where it may be a long way to the nearest road,” says Simon Sunna.
