Today, Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the United Nations World Food Program expressed its “deep” concern regarding the closure of the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings in southern Gaza, warning of the depletion of food stocks in the Strip.
The World Food Program said on the “X” platform that it expresses “deep concern about the closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing and the Rafah crossing, which poses challenges to the arrival of aid” to the Strip.
The UN program explained that current food stocks “only cover 1-4 days of needs in Rafah, Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis.”
On Tuesday morning, the Israeli army announced “operational control” of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, which connects the Gaza Strip to Egypt.
He added in a statement: “The forces cut off the Rafah crossing from the Salah al-Din axis, and now armored forces from the 401st Brigade are in complete control of the crossing.”
By controlling the Rafah crossing, Israel has closed the only land crossing through which wounded and sick Palestinians exit to receive treatment outside the Gaza Strip, in light of the deteriorating health situation in the Gaza areas as a result of the ongoing war that has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000.
