Leaders Cup: Nanterre takes on ASVEL

At the end of a match that was indecisive until the end, Nanterre created the first surprise of the 2024 edition of the Leaders Cup by getting the better of ASVEL (78-82) to join Bourg-en-Bresse in the last square.

Ten years later, Nanterre can believe in a new Leaders Cup final. The Ile-de-France club surprised the audience at the Arena Saint-Etienne Métropole by getting the better of ASVEL in the second quarter-final. If the two teams went head to head from the start, it was the Villeurbannais who were in the lead for most of the time. The gap gradually increased to reach eight lengths at the end of these ten minutes.

Joffrey Lauvergne’s teammates (14 points, 6 rebounds) did not stop there to reach ten points at the very start of the second quarter. Feeling that the match could escape them, Pascal Donnadieu’s protégés found the resources to stay in contact with ASVEL, without however managing to fall below four points behind. A gap that the Ile-de-France residents were able to restore just before returning to the locker room. The Nanterre players returned to the floor with a completely different state of mind on both sides of the pitch.

Nanterre resisted the return of ASVEL

Indeed, they tightened the game in defense as much as they found solutions in attack. Ibrahima Fall Faye’s teammates (24 points, 6 rebounds) then gave Pierric Poupet’s players a real nightmare, who conceded a 15-0 which allowed Nanterre to take control on the scoreboard. Remobilized by their coach, the Villeurbannais found their bearings to erase almost all their delay before the start of the last ten minutes.

Scoring the first five points of the final quarter, ASVEL was able to regain control of the score but the difference between the two teams then only oscillated between one and four points. The change finally took place after a 9-0 achieved by the Nanterriens. In pride, the ASVEL players were able to get closer to one unit in the last seconds but, in the free throw game, it was the Ile-de-France residents who had the last word (78-82). A success which allows them to join Bourg-en-Bresse for the first semi-final, this Saturday in Saint-Chamond.
