Constant lying these days shows lessons from youth not universally learned | Letter

U.S. NEWS

In my youth, many of the lessons I learned and the behavioral guidance I received from my elders was by way of sayings. Among many of these sayings I remember and think about are some particularly relevant to the current times.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” and “Lie to me once – shame on you; lie to me twice – shame on me.” The evidence I have now is that not all people have learned these lessons the same way as I did.

So, considering the second of these, what guidance should I now have for 30,000 lies or untruths and counting?
