Hacker stole $47K from Pa. community college: police

U.S. NEWS

A hacker manipulated bank information to take almost $47,000 intended for Lehigh Carbon Community College, state police say.

The transaction was at 2:16 p.m. April 28, according to a news release issued Wednesday by Pennsylvania State Police at the Bethlehem barracks.

The release says police are investigating a wire fraud case. It says someone hacked into a vendor’s network and changed bank information for Lehigh Carbon’s deposits. The hacker took $46,745, the release says.

It’s unclear why it took more than a month for authorities to report the incident or whether state police have made progress tracking down the thief.

An email sent to the media relations department at the college in North Whitehall Township wasn’t immediately returned.

Founded in 1966, Lehigh Carbon Community College serves more than 9,700 students each year from Lehigh, Carbon, Schuylkill and surrounding counties, according to its website.
