Transit Alliance gives public transportation poor grades

Miami-Dade County needs to improve its transportation grade point average, according to a report by Transit Alliance Miami.
The alliance is a non-profit organization advocating for walkable streets, bikeable neighborhoods and better public transit in Miami-Dade County.

“We are long past the Covid-19 excuses,” said Shaan Patel, the alliance’s co-executive director. “Miami-Dade transit riders need better performance from all of our transit services.”

The 2023 “Mobility Scorecard” is a five-year update on the organization’s first report issued in 2018.
Key takeaways from the new scorecard include:

■Pedestrian and cyclist fatalities in Miami-Dade are almost double the national average, adjusted for population.
■95% of bike lanes across Miami-Dade County are unprotected.

■About 20% of buses are delayed, with the worst performing weekday routes being 301, 113, 101, 105, and 32.

■Buses with a dedicated lane were significantly faster than others. ■While Metrorail on-time performance is good (50% on time), the trains often operate at a 30-minute frequency on weekends and weekday evenings, making the service difficult to use.

■14 of the 23 community trolley services operate at costs to government of over $10 per rider, making the service in some municipalities extremely expensive.

■The highest cost system, Homestead, is operating at a cost to government of $78 per rider.

■Only in the cities of Coral Gables and Miami do trolleys operate at headways of 15 minutes or less.

“The scorecard’s recommendations promote larger connectivity of the Miami-Dade County mobility system,” said Cathy Dos Santos, the alliance’s associate director.

“Improving connectivity and scheduling between trolleys and buses,” she said, “makes both systems more efficient, addressing pedestrian and cyclist safety around stations, which expands commute options for our residents.”
