Last year was officially declared the hottest in history and warned that 2024 is likely to break its record, writes the Daily Mail.
This forecast was confirmed by April 2024 – last month was officially recognized as the hottest April in history: global temperatures were 0.67°C above average. Moreover, April became the 11th month in a row in a series of the hottest periods.

Data from the EU Climate Change Service Copernicus shows that last month was warmer than any previous April on record. Researchers believe the rise in surface air temperatures was linked to record levels of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, as well as El Niño, which still dominates the Pacific Ocean and influences weather across the globe.

It is known that global average temperatures tend to rise during El Niño as warmer water spreads further and remains closer to the surface. As a result, more heat is released into the planet’s atmosphere, creating more humid, warmer air.
Observations show that the surface air temperature for the month was 15.03°C, which is 0.67°C above the average for April between 1991 and 2020, and also 0.14°C above the previous maximum set in April 2016.

The researchers also note that the average global temperature over the past 12 months, from May 2023 to April 2024, is the highest on record – 1.61°C above the period 1850-1900. Note that this indicator is used as a benchmark for pre-industrial levels.
In Europe, which is warming the fastest on Earth due to man-made climate change, temperatures in April 2024 were 1.49°C above average. As a result, last month became the second hottest period on record.
