The Kremlin appears to have been caught off guard by the fact that Russian territory is susceptible to drone strikes from Ukrainian soil, the expert believes.

Defense and security analyst Matthias Eken told Newsweek that the Russians, rather than formulating a coherent strategy, have largely resorted to ad hoc measures following attacks on their territory. “Russia’s problem does not stem from a lack of equipment, but rather from a historical focus on a different type of threat,” the source said.

“The Kremlin appears to have been caught off guard by the fact that its territory is susceptible to drone strikes from Ukraine, including attacks on air bases such as Engels… There is some evidence that current short-range air defense systems, especially Pantsir, have difficulty effectively counter small light drones,” the expert emphasized.

After the Russians carried out a full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine, in the Russian Federation itself there were more than once explosions at important military installations, including airfields, as well as at oil refineries.

At the beginning of this year, the head of the defense committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Andrei Kartapolov, admitted that the Russian Ministry of Defense cannot even completely protect St. Petersburg from drone strikes – and this is the second city in the country in terms of population after Moscow.
