According to analysts, the car plant, which was previously a symbol of cooperation between the two Koreas, was repurposed to increase the DPRK’s military capabilities in the production of MLRS systems, an important element of the country’s military arsenal.

North Korean State Council Chairman Kim Jong Un produces missile launchers at a former automobile plant, a joint venture with South Korea. Security Analyst Geoffrey Lewis reported on the social network X (Twitter).

The facility, which houses rows of mobile missile launchers that the North Korean leader inspected last Monday, was once an auto factory, according to the director of the East Asia nonproliferation program.

“The National Defense Enterprise where Kim Jong-un reviewed the 240mm multiple launch rocket systems is the former Pyeonghwa Motors plant,” he wrote.

The Pyeonghwa Motors plant was founded in 1998 as a joint venture between North Korea and a firm associated with the South Korean religious movement the Unification Church. This is one of two car factories in the DPRK.

The South Korean publication Chosun Daily, citing an unnamed military expert, reported the similarity of the two objects. It is very likely that the former automobile plant is now producing military equipment, journalists believe.

This is confirmed by the NK Pro analytical group in its report.

“The plant, once a symbol of cooperation between the two Koreas, produced cars, but has since been repurposed to increase North Korea’s military capabilities, especially in the production of MLRS systems, a key element of the country’s military arsenal,” the analysts explained.

During an inspection at a “defense-industrial enterprise” last Monday, 40-year-old Kim Jong-un “familiarized himself with the tactical missile system that units of the Korean People’s Army will receive,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.

Such designs were at the 16 March plant, where transport and launchers are produced. Perhaps Kim Jong-un made a package deal.

Kim Jong-un was accompanied by Hong Yong-chil, one from deputy director of the department of military industry. He did not appear in North Korean media from July 2019 to August last year. It has been suggested that he died or retired.

Let us recall that for testing against Ukraine, North Korea may transfer new versions of the 240-mm MLRS to the Russian Federation.

It is also reported that the crown leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, attended the funeral of a propagandist involved in creating a cult of personality around his family.
