On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is visiting France, reacted lukewarmly to the Swiss conference.
Beijing supports a peace conference on the war in Ukraine, in which all parties will participate at an equal level, said Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui.
“China stands for the timely convening of an international peace conference, approved by the Russian and Ukrainian sides, with equal participation of all parties and a fair discussion of all options for peace,” the ambassador said, according to Reuters.
Switzerland will hold talks at a two-day high-level conference on June 15-16 aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, to which Moscow was not invited. On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is visiting France, reacted lukewarmly to the Swiss conference.
Moscow said it saw no point in Ukraine peace talks in Switzerland, while Kyiv said it saw no place for Russia at the summit, which is taking place near the Swiss city of Lucerne.
War in Ukraine – China’s position
More than a year ago, Beijing put forward a 12-point document that laid out broad principles for ending the war but did not go into detail.
At the time, the plan received a cool reception in both Russia and Ukraine, while the United States said China was positioning itself as a peacemaker but reflected Russia’s “false narrative” and failed to condemn its invasion.
China’s ambassador to Russia said Beijing was willing to continue to play its role and bring “Chinese wisdom” to help “resolve the crisis.”
“In order to prevent the conflict from escalating and getting out of control, all parties must make common efforts to restore peace as quickly as possible,” Rossiya quotes the diplomat as saying.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, on a two-day visit to France, strongly opposed criticism of his country for its close relations with Russia during the war in Ukraine. According to The New York Times, Xi said that “we are against the crisis being used to shift responsibility to a third country, tarnish its image and spark a new Cold War.”
