Scholz announced Germany's readiness to defend NATO territory - UNIAN War in Ukraine news

The Bundeswehr is ready to quickly deploy its forces to protect its allies.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that Germany is firmly committed to protecting every square centimeter of NATO territory from Russian aggression.

According to the press service of the German government, the Bundeswehr is ready to quickly deploy its forces to protect its allies – the Baltic countries.

“The security of our Baltic allies is our security. An attack on you would be an attack on us. This should not happen,” the chancellor said at a meeting with the heads of government of the Baltic countries.

According to Scholz, the Bundeswehr will defend North-Eastern and Central Europe. In particular, almost 35 thousand German soldiers are ready to quickly provide support.

As the politician noted, due to the tense security situation in the Baltics, Germany and other allies two years ago decided to redeploy additional units to the Baltic countries in order to strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance. In addition, Germany will take over “air patrols” in Estonia and Latvia, and a full brigade will be stationed in Lithuania.

Scholz believes that the Kremlin miscalculated: instead of dividing Europe and weakening NATO, the Russian war against Ukraine violated international law and strengthened the unity of the Alliance.

“Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are determined to expand support for Ukraine,” the chancellor added.

Part of this effort is an initiative to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. Also, according to Scholz, it is necessary to increase sanctions pressure on Russia.

NATO and a possible war with the Russian Federation

According to the WSJ, NATO troops from 14 member countries gathered in Latvia to take part in the Alliance’s largest military exercises since the Cold War. One of the main goals is to send a signal to Moscow that the Alliance is ready to protect its members, especially those close to the Russian border, including Latvia.

The media wrote that Germany plans to prepare US troops for battles on NATO’s eastern front.
