Before the Day of the Dead, modern Mexicans wash the bones of relatives who died several years ago. The washed bones are placed in special wooden boxes and then taken to the cemetery. Later, on a holiday, the bones are wrapped in embroidered napkins and laid out on the altar along with funeral candles and food. Residents of Mexico believe that thanks to this, their loved ones will find peace and also feel cared for.
