Glide bombs of the aggressor have become one of the main problems of the Ukrainian Armed Forces recently.
Ukraine seems to have begun the hunt for warehouses with Russian “winged” aerial bombs, which have become a big problem for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in recent months. Business Insider writes about this, analyzing the latest drone strikes on Russian territory.
The publication notes that gliding bombs are extremely difficult to intercept in flight, and they are dropped from aircraft far beyond the range of Ukrainian air defense systems. Therefore, to counter this threat, it is necessary to hit planes at airfields, or directly at bomb depots.
This is likely what happened last Saturday, when dozens of kamikaze drones struck the Kushchevskaya airfield, where Russian Su-34 and Su-35 fighters are based, which are used daily to carry out attacks on Ukrainian forward positions using glide bombs.
According to British intelligence, footage from the site of the strike suggests that the drones hit the warehouse with kits for glide bombs. Although it is not yet known whether the planes themselves were damaged.
“Ukraine’s ability to disrupt Russian tactical aircraft, particularly the use of glide bombs, is key to wider frontline defense,” British intelligence said.
As the author of the publication notes, Saturday’s attack on the Kushchevskaya airbase is not the first time that Ukraine has attacked Russian airbases where aircraft capable of dropping glide bombs are located. In early April, Ukraine launched a powerful drone attack on the Morozovsk air base near Rostov.
“While the extent of the damage is not fully known, the attack appears to underscore Ukraine’s desire to eliminate the threat of a glide bomb before the aircraft can take off,” the publication noted.
Drone attack on the Kushchevskaya base
As UNIAN wrote, on April 27, drones attacked the Kushchevskaya military airfield in the Krasnodar Territory. Then the Russians reported more than 60 downed drones and claimed that they did not suffer any losses.
On the same day, a video of the fire extinguishing at the airfield appeared online, showing that a warehouse containing bomb kits was hit. Also the next day, satellite images appeared that clearly showed the significant extent of the fire at the airfield.
