Thanks to this, old Ukrainian fighters can now take on many Western weapons, the US Department of Defense noted.

Ukrainian pilots use iPads to carry out combat missions against Russian air defense systems. According to Business Insider, this could be further evidence that the US is working with Ukraine to help it adapt Western technology to aging Soviet aircraft.

US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Supply William LaPlante noted that thanks to this, old Ukrainian fighters can now take on many Western weapons, The Telegraph reports.

Defense publication The War Zone noted that iPads or similar tablets could help in so-called “Wild Weasel” missions.

“The strategy involves jet pilots luring enemy air defenses into targeting them with their radars. The radar waves are then tracked to their source and targeted by Ukrainian pilots with weapons such as the US AGM-88 High-Velocity Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARMs). ),” the publication says.

The tablets are said to be “vital to the deployment of several Western-supplied air-to-ground weapons” as Ukraine’s Soviet-era fighters lack the data interfaces that provide “seamless compatibility” with the latest missiles.

The US Air Force developed the “Wild Weasel” strategy during the Vietnam War following the introduction of Soviet surface-to-air missiles for air defense systems that used radar to pinpoint targets.
