“If I lived in Lithuania, I would be an active member of the Lithuanian Jewish community. At least to avoid a third marriage,” the guest from the USA winked mischievously, along with Taube Center for Jewish Life & Learning brought together by a group of like-minded people visiting Jewish heritage sites in Poland and Lithuania.

The fellow passengers smiled broadly, remembering the old anecdote they had just heard about the fact that in Lithuania a man should marry three times – a Polish woman, a Jewish woman and a Lithuanian woman. His first wife would show him what true passion is. The second would teach him how to handle money, and the third would take good care of his grave after his death.

“Well, we don’t regulate life for young people, but we try so that our seniors don’t have to look for someone to take care of them – LŽB social center employees visit them every day, provide all kinds of help, organize entertainment and, most importantly, dispel the feeling of loneliness,” he said while introducing the community’s activities Michail Segal, director of the Saulo Kagan Social Center.

The guests were interested in the history and current life of the Litvaks, asked what they could contribute to the popularization of Jewish culture, they knew very well that September 23. will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius ghetto and asked if Lithuania will commemorate this painful anniversary as spectacularly as the Poles honored the victims of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

It was a very pleasant and cozy afternoon. See you next time!
