However, there was no reason to fear, because it turned out that it was not a dangerous hornet, but a harmless mammoth wasp. It only resembles a hornet, but it is nowhere near dangerous, but very useful, explained the Secretariat for Environmental Protection, Agriculture and rural development, which reassured the inhabitants of Kikinda. “The insect that resembles a hornet is actually a mammoth wasp (Megascolia maculata). It is a very useful insect, which is not aggressive and does not attack people. They appear in the period from mid-May to mid-June. Adults are about six to seven centimeters long, feed on nectar and are important pollinators,” the city’s Secretariat for Environmental Protection said. They noted that mammoth wasps are always found near rotten stumps or in tree hollows. “Every kind of wasp is without reason, because it is a useful and harmless insect,” said the Secretariat. By the way, the female mammoth wasp is larger than the male and has a yellow head, with claws, while the male is black, “Večernje novosti” reported.
