Another wave of fraudulent SMS messages – do not click on the links | Chip.cz

World news

Mobile operator O2 has seen an increase in the number of fraudulent and harassing SMS messages on its network. The aim of the attackers is to lure customers’ login data to the mobile self-service, or even payment card data. Do not click on links in suspicious SMS messages

Operator O2 has seen increased activity by fraudsters in recent weeks. They send out SMS messages with a false notification that, for example, their SIM card is expiring and a symbolic amount must be paid for renewal. When the user clicks on the link, it is easy to get the impression that they are on a real O2 recharge gateway.

Fraudulent SMS messages contain a URL link to fake websites, masquerading as real websites such as payment gateways, MY O2, courier companies, banks, etc. It is quite difficult to recognize that these are fraudulent websites because they resemble the real ones. In this way, fraudsters try to obtain payment card information or login data to various services.

O2’s effort is to recognize and stop fraudulent behavior as quickly as possible, and that is why it is introducing a new contact number 720 002 002. Customers can forward suspicious SMS messages to this number. They will be directed to O2’s security department, for whom the content of SMS messages is important information and evidence of fraudulent activity. Based on them, O2 can block the source of sending SMS messages.
