According to the SBU’s findings, the resident of Bakhmut was recruited by the Russian GRU military intelligence before the full-scale invasion. His case officer was Nikita Klimovsky.

The first task of the agent after February 24 last year was to provide the Russians with information on the effectiveness of the raids on Bakhmut. The occupiers were also interested in the exact coordinates of the bridges in Bachmut and on its outskirts.

The next task was much more difficult and required more dedication to the Russian secret services. A GRU officer ordered the agent to move to the Dnepropetrovsk region and join the Ukrainian defense forces.

“After enlisting in one of the military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy agent collected information about the number of personnel and available weapons in the units. Perpetrator he also provided the aggressor with information about possible visits to the garrison by representatives of the Supreme Command of the SZU Forces” – reported the SBU.

Investigators are now checking whether the Russians were preparing sabotage actions against the units that the traitor had infiltrated.

Red-handed

The GRU was most interested in any information regarding the location of the Ukrainian air defense system and the latest Western weapons. Most likely, the agent did not have time to prove himself, because he was detained during a special operation of Ukrainian civil and military counterintelligence officers.

The traitor fell while trying to transfer intelligence to the Russian secret services. It was established that he used the Telegram communicator to communicate with the military intelligence of the Russian Federation.

During the search, two mobile phones were found on the detainee. He only used one to communicate with his GRU handler.

The agent is now facing life imprisonment.
