Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev said that if communications are unblocked, Russian border guards will control transport links between Nakhichevan and the rest of Azerbaijan through Armenia.

“Control, according to the tripartite statement dated November 9/10, 2020, in order to organize the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles and cargo, will be carried out by the border service of the FSB of Russia,” he said in an interview with Azerbaijani media, commenting on the results of the June 2 meeting in Moscow meetings of the trilateral working group co-chaired by the vice-premiers of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.

Answering the question about the stage of the negotiations, the Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister said that discussions are currently underway to agree on technical details. “Negotiations are being conducted on the basis of paragraph 9 of the joint Statement of November 9/10, 2020 in order to implement its provisions as soon as possible. The tasks are very clear. It is planned to restore the existing and build new transport communications linking the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the western regions of Azerbaijan. The implementation of both passenger and freight traffic, as well as vehicles will be ensured,” he said.

Earlier, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan stated that in case of unblocking communications in the region, all border services should be carried out by the relevant structures of Armenia. “Unblocking in the context of Armenia [означает]that all border services will be carried out only by the services of Armenia,” he said.
