Boxing remains in the Olympics – the International Federation is thrown out

World news

The announcement from the IOC, the International Olympic Committee, was expected.

The IOC’s executive committee proposes that Iba be stripped of its Olympic status at an extra session on June 22, but that boxing should remain on the Olympic program in Paris 2024.

IOC members rarely go against proposals from the Executive Committee and the meeting will probably be just a formality.

Previously, Sweden together with seven other nations, including the USA and Great Britain, started a new world federation, World Boxing (WB). Sweden was subsequently suspended by Iba.

Iba is led by the Russians Umar Kremlev and has long been criticized for, among other things, financial mismanagement and recurring referee and leadership scandals.

Before the Olympics in Tokyo, the IOC chose to remove Iba and arrange the qualifying and main tournament themselves.

According to the news agency AP, Wednesday’s announcement opens the door to the possibility that boxing may remain on the Olympic program in Los Angeles in 2028 after all. Boxing does not exist there at the moment.

Iba and Umar Kremlev reacted angrily to Wednesday’s announcement, calling it “abhorrent and purely political” and threatening to take the matter to court.
