“The highway to Košice will be ready by 2010!” This legendary sentence, uttered by the current Prime Minister Robert Fico more than 15 years ago, does not even need to be reminded. The year is 2024, and there is no point in speculating when the highway between Košice and Bratislava, which has been under construction for 50 years, will be ready. The last statements of politicians talk about 2030.

While Slovakia has not been able to connect the capital with the metropolis of the East by transport for decades, there is talk of an even bigger megaproject.

Megaproject

During Fico’s government, several people took turns in the chair of the Minister of Transport, but not a single one managed to complete the aforementioned highway from Bratislava to the second largest city.

In a video on the social network, the Minister of Transport of the Slovak Republic, Jozef Ráž (nominee of Smeru-SD), talks about the magnificent construction plan. The Ministry of Transport has published the latest information related to the construction of D1, D4, but also the construction of the Karpaty tunnel in the Lesser Carpathian massif.

The recently adopted law on extraordinary measures for strategic investments and for the construction of the TEN-T could help in starting its construction.

Ráž added that if the project is classified as a strategic investment, it is not excluded that the construction of the tunnel could begin before the end of the election period.

Crossroads D1 and D4

“The intersection of D1 and D4 looks like the worst is over. We are already out of the ground, there are no more surprises in the form of unexpected landslides. At the moment, works are underway at this intersection, where embankments and detours are being made. These will serve to ensure that traffic can flow smoothly around the works when it is lifted and expanded. Then they will serve as connectors,” Jozef Ráž explains in the video.

According to him, the original proposal envisaged several bridge bodies, but the whole thing was put into the ground due to public objections. “The entire highway is being raised to make underpasses that will provide the connectors,” continues the minister.

Drivers in and around Bratislava will be pleased that the most important branch from Jaroviec to Trnava will be put into operation by the end of this year. At the same time, the branch from Trnava to Rača will open with this branch. Two more branches should be commissioned by the end of next year.

After the completion of the intersection, however, the bypass will not be finished, there remains an expensive section that needs to be completed, and that is the Carpathian tunnel.
