cannabis use increases risk of depression and bipolar disorder

World news

Chronic cannabis use doubles the risk of depression and four times the risk of bipolar disorder. These conclusions were reached by Danish scientists during a study involving 6.6 million people born in 1995-2021. The work was published in the scientific journal JAMA.

Cannabis-related disorders were identified in 56,000 people. 41% of them were diagnosed with major depression. 14% have bipolar disorder.

The results of the new study are consistent with the findings of previous studies. It is believed that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of cannabis, increases the risk of psychosis. It disrupts the function of the parts of the brain that process information and determine behavior.
