Wang Weihua said that his father Wang Shuanzhu passed away suddenly on April 28, 2024. The old man’s last regret was that he could not retrieve the 101 silver coins that were wrongly seized by the authorities in 2010. These 101 silver coins were the only relic left by his grandfather to his father. The relevant departments decided to return these silver coins to the old man in 2012. But at that time, the old man found that some silver coins had been transferred and refused to accept them.
Wang Weihua said that the old man had been asking the authorities to return the photos and videos taken when they were detained over the years, but he had never been able to do so until the old man passed away suddenly. Hours after Du Wen’s open letter to Xi Jinping was issued, Hohhot police urgently ordered the return of the silver coins.
According to Radio Free Asia, the case of Du Wen, former executive director of the Inner Mongolia Government’s Legal Counsel Office, for “public gift giving” involved Zhao Liping, former vice chairman of the Inner Mongolia CPPCC and former director of the Public Security Department, and Wu Zhi, former deputy secretary-general of the Inner Mongolia government and former director of the Legal Affairs Office. Loyalty once caused a sensation in China. After Du Wen was released, he appealed to China’s Supreme Court for a long time to no avail. Du Wen and his wife left China six months ago and, with the assistance of overseas human rights organizations, obtained a humanitarian visa issued by the Belgian government.
Du Wen told Radio Free Asia that these silver coins were the only relics left by his father-in-law. “The old man’s sudden death is most directly related to the unjust injustice and unfair justice suffered by our family. According to reports, Du Wen’s father is Han and his mother is Mongolian. His Mongolian name is Ulan Tuk. Du Wen has cooperated with the Chinese State Council Government’s Rule of Law Research Center on many occasions to conduct research on the current situation of China’s rule of law, and has served as legal advisor to Hu Chunhua, Yang Jing, Battelle and others. In 2010, Du Wen was sentenced to 12 years and eight months in prison for his involvement in a case against the government’s appropriation of Catholic church property and a case of bribery of provincial government public funds. This case not only involved senior Inner Mongolian officials Zhu Mingguo, Zhao Liping, Wu Zhizhong, etc. It also attracted attention because it involved many sensitive institutions and figures such as the Ministry of Public Security, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Supreme Court, and the National People’s Congress.
