Close Polish-American ties as an important element of deterrence – says prof. Żurawski aka Grajewski

During his visit to the United States, the head of the Ministry of National Defense took part in the ceremonial transfer of duties to Gen. Maciej Jabłoński, Deputy Commander of the V Corps of the US Army Land Forces. The Forward Command of the US Army V Corps is located in Poznań. – Any increase in the American presence in Poland is an element of significant Russian-led deterrence. The Russians only respect military power. Demonstrating this presence and determination to defend NATO’s eastern borders and close Polish-American ties are an important element of deterrence, Prof. Przemysław Żurawski aka Grajewski from the University of Lodz (UŁ).

Today, the head of the Ministry of National Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak, visited the main base of the V Corps of the Land Forces in Fort Knox, where he participated in the ceremonial transfer of duties to the deputy commander of the V Corps of the US Army Land Forces, Gen. Maciej Jabłoński. General Jabłoński will replace Maj. Gen. Adam Joks, for the second time a Polish officer takes such an important and prestigious position.

– The tasks that faced General Joks, and which will be continued by General Jabłoński, are situational awareness for the US troops on NATO’s eastern flank, which is provided by the Polish commander

– announced the head of the Ministry of National Defense.

The command of the 5th US Army Corps was reactivated in 2020 in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and its forward position functions in the permanent presence formula as Camp Kościuszko in Poznań. The command of the Corps consists of about 600 soldiers, of which nearly 200 serve in Poland. Its main task is to coordinate activities and supervise the US ground forces on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance, operational planning as well as cooperation and synchronization of the activities of US forces with the troops of other NATO countries. The command plays a key role in integrating the American troops deployed in Poland and synchronizing their cooperation with our armed forces.

As noted by Prof. Żurwski vel Grajewski, deterrence consists in influencing the enemy’s decision-making process.

– The enemy must understand that our allies they are there and they don’t promise to come. In such a situation, his military planning must include ordering his own invasion troops in case they come into combat contact with US troops. Entering into combat contact with the troops of a superpower is a political decision that will probably not be taken by the Russians. And that’s what we want, after all, so that there is no war

– notes the political scientist.

Currently, over 100,000 American soldiers and employees of the US Department of Defense are stationed in Europe. In the case of Poland, we can talk about a contingent about 10 thousand military from the United States.
