CNN poll: Trump’s advantage is growing

World news

As this year’s election approaches, Americans appear to be increasingly positive about former US President Donald Trump, increasingly favoring him over incumbent Joe Biden and seeing his tenure as a success, according to a new CNN poll.

According to a survey published on Sunday, American voters would support Trump in a fight against Biden by a ratio of 49% to 43%. In comparison, the Republican led the incumbent Democrat 49% to 45% in January.

According to the survey, Trump’s advantage is even greater if the entire field is taken into account. In this case, Trump’s lead is 42% over Biden, who was polled at 33%, followed by independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 15%. The remaining 10% support third-party candidates or are undecided.

Two-thirds of American voters don’t understand how anyone could support Biden, while 52% say they would never vote for the incumbent. In comparison, 63% of respondents do not understand how anyone could support Trump, and 47% say there is no chance they will vote for him.

Only 47% of voters are satisfied with the candidates they can choose from, including 44% of Democrats and 63% of Republicans, reports CNN. 58% of voters have a negative opinion of Biden, while 53% have a negative opinion of Trump. Only 65% of those polled believe that Biden won the 2020 presidential election legitimately, which is unchanged from when the same question was asked after the January 2021 US Capitol riots.

Opinions of Trump’s presidency have improved since he left office. Looking back on his performance, 55% of Americans believe that Trump’s presidency was “successful”, compared to 45% when voters were asked after the riots. Compared to this, only 39% of those surveyed said that Biden’s tenure was successful, the survey revealed.

Similarly, six in ten Americans disapprove of Biden’s performance as president. It received low marks for its handling of several issues of most concern to voters: 66% dissatisfied with the economy, 71% dissatisfied with inflation, and 71% dissatisfied with the Israel-Hamas war. Only four out of ten Americans believe that it is the USA’s “responsibility” to participate in conflicts in the Middle East.

Trump has accused Biden and his allies in office of trying to block his candidacy through the court system. The former president faces 91 criminal charges in four separate indictments. According to a CNN poll released Thursday, only 13 percent of Americans think Trump should be treated the same as other criminal defendants. Only 44 percent of them trust that the jury selected in the first trial of the Trump case, which is now taking place in New York, will deliver a fair verdict.
