PRESIDENT SILVA VISITED THE FLOOD AREA
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who visited the disaster area for the second time, announced that there were no obstacles in delivering humanitarian aid to the region. Emphasizing that the collapsed roads and public buildings will be rebuilt, Lula da Silva said, “Bureaucracy will not be able to prevent us from regaining this province. I pray to God that there will be no more rain.” he said.
421 THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED
According to local media, 421 thousand people were negatively affected by the floods, and telephone and internet services were not provided in 115 towns. Thousands of people left the towns as houses and lands were flooded. Since there are still towns that cannot be reached, it is feared that the number of dead and missing will increase even more.
A SITUATION OF DISASTER WAS DECLARED
In his statement on May 3, Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite stated that there were still areas they could not reach and said, “We are going through an extremely exceptional situation. This is not a critical event, but the most devastating event in the history of the state.” He used the following expressions: Leite said that due to the magnitude of the tragedy, they declared a “state of disaster” for 180 days and made serious efforts to evacuate people.
