1989 CRACK IN THE IRON CURTAIN

Hungary begins the demolition of the electrified barbed wire fence on the country’s border with Austria. It was the first crack in the Iron Curtain that had been dividing Europe for 40 years.

The historical moment was transmitted by Western journalists, who came especially to the Austro-Hungarian border. Many Eastern Europeans flee to the West this way.

The USSR does not take any measures against Hungary. The opening of the border caused a chain reaction in the Eastern bloc. By the end of the year, the communist regimes become history.

1952 THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

72 years ago, air travel was changing forever. In the UK, the first passenger plane with jet engines enters service – the de Havilland Comet.

The first flight was London-Johannesburg, operated by predecessor British Airways. There were 42 people on board. Comet flew at 740 km/h at 13,000 m altitude.

The new plane was faster and flew higher than any other rival. Propeller aircraft became immediately obsolete. A new era of aviation was beginning, an era in which we still live today.
