EU: Genocide in Srebrenica is a fact

World news

The EUROPEAN Union resolutely rejects attempts to deny the genocide committed in Srebrenica in 1995 and asks the politicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina to stop doing so, according to a special statement published today by the EU Delegation in Sarajevo.

“There is no place in Europe for denying the genocide in Srebrenica”

Reacting to the actions of politicians and authorities in the Republika Srpska, which this week intensified the campaign aimed at disputing the genocide in Srebrenica, as well as the figure of over eight thousand Bosniak victims who were killed by members of the Bosnian Serb army and police in 1995, the EU Delegation pointed out that it condemns repeated denial of the facts about the Srebrenica genocide.

In particular, he warns against unacceptable decisions and debates during the session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska on April 18 and the meeting that was held afterwards in Banja Luka with the presence of the highest officials of the RS, but also representatives of the Serbian authorities such as the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament Ana Brnabić.

The RS Parliament adopted the revisionist report on Srebrenica, which was drawn up in 2021 by a commission established and paid for by the entity government, and claims that there was no genocide in Srebrenica and that no more than three and a half thousand Bosniaks died there.

Immediately afterwards, at a “people’s meeting” organized by the leader of the RS Milorad Dodik, key politicians from that entity, as well as the Serbian Speaker of the Parliament Brnabić, repeated such claims, condemning all those who are ready to support the adoption of the resolution in the United Nations, which on July 11 declared the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide.

“Srebrenica is not a matter of someone’s personal judgment”

The EU is now warning them that the genocide committed in July 1995 in Srebrenica is not a matter of someone’s personal judgment and point of view.

“This is a historical fact established in court proceedings before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2004 and the International Court of Justice in 2007. There is no place in Europe for denial of genocide, revisionism and glorification of war criminals, and we reject any denial, relativization or misinterpretation of the Srebrenica genocide” , the statement said.

In a special EU statement, it is added that the basis of true reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is empathy and appreciation of the facts about the suffering of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the last war, and disputing the solid facts about the Srebrenica genocide creates additional pain and traumatizes the families of the victims.

“We call on all political leaders and others in leading positions in BiH to show the way (toward reconciliation) through showing respect for the victims and promoting reconciliation. Political actors should refrain from provocative rhetoric or moves and focus on the country’s strides on its European path, which is the desired goal of the vast majority of BiH citizens,” is the message from the EU to politicians in BiH.
