General elections in Spain: in search of an Ace?

World news

Normally it would be a trump card, but given the situation as it turned out for the left after the municipal and regional elections, it could become a desperate action with unforeseeable consequences.

However, in a matter of “political poker” surprising strategies are common and in the idea of turning around a very uncomfortable situation to govern, clearly Sánchez resorts to the minimum impact: if he keeps the position in Moncloa it will be a success without precedents and if you miss it, it will confirm that it was time for a break.

It will also be a matter of seeing if the leftist forces close ranks around the head of the Executive and leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) or, as up to now, discrepancies and conflicting positions continue to surface.

After the disaster this Sunday, Sánchez took public opinion and undoubtedly the political class by surprise, by announcing the advancement of the general elections.

The Cortes Generales (Parliament) will be dissolved this Wednesday to comply with the legal deadlines and to be able to anticipate the general elections on July 23.

Before, King Felipe VI, with whom Sánchez has already spoken, must sign the royal decree of dissolution.

This Monday afternoon, the Council of Ministers will approve the royal decree that will dissolve Congress and the Senate, His Majesty will sign it, to later be published this Tuesday in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

The elections will be held on Sunday, July 23, I appeal this decision in view of the results of the elections held yesterday. I assume the results firsthand and I believe it is necessary to give an answer and submit our democratic mandate to the popular will, Sánchez declared. This Sunday, the conservatives of the Popular Party (PP) displaced the socialists from important mayoralties such as those of Seville and Valencia, at the same time that they firmly consolidated themselves in the Community and City Council of Madrid, with two heavyweights of the organization the head, Isabel Díaz Ayuso and José Luis Martínez Almeida, respectively.

On the other hand, the PP dominated in six regions where the Socialists governed: the Valencian Community, Aragon, Extremadura, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands and Cantabria. And crouched down, no longer in the shadows, the extreme right of Vox scored good points.

In the municipal elections, the PP obtained more than seven million votes (31.5 percent), compared to 6.2 million (28.1%) for the PSOE.

The Second Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, wrote on her Twitter account that she is ready to take on the challenge.

“The message received last night was very clear: things have to be done differently. No distractions. From this very moment we are working to win on July 23. I take on the challenge, ”she stressed.

Díaz embraces the Sumar movement, on the left, possibly one of the important candidacies for early elections that could change the political course of the Iberian country.
