According to tradition, on the first Sunday of June every year, those working in the construction and building materials industry celebrate Builders’ Day, when we salute those whose sacrificial activities the quality and beauty of our built environment – and it is not an exaggeration to say – the safety of our world and life depend on. Therefore, the shaping of the built environment is not the internal matter of a single profession, but a defining social and socio-political issue.

This year, at the central ceremony on June 2nd, the recognition certificates and awards were presented in the hall of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The more than 200 guests who came to the festive event were able to see the exhibition of the Construction Excellence Award winners and the performance of the Danubia Orchestra.

The most important factor in the construction industry is the person, said László Koji, president of the National Professional Association of Construction Contractors (ÉVOSZ). The sector employs 380,000 people. Complemented by the building materials industry, as well as representatives of education and science, half a million colleagues are thanked for their work at this time. The entire value chain accounts for 12 percent of the country’s production value. Despite unprecedented price increases, energy shortages and procurement difficulties, the sector realized HUF 6,850 billion in construction and installation work in 2022. However, the sector is facing new challenges. Demanding customers set new expectations: energy efficiency, sustainability, and innovation are becoming important issues. If all players in the sector are able to adapt to new needs, the Hungarian construction industry will be able to build with outstanding quality, the president added.

As dr. Tibor Czigány, rector of the BME, said: it is symbolic that the BME Central building can host the greeting of workers in the construction industry, as the institution is characterized by strong foundations and massive walls. He said that he is proud that today 40 percent of domestic engineering and IT diplomas are awarded by the University of Technology, while 26 universities in the country offer such courses, and in master’s programs it accounts for 70 percent of diplomas. This entails a huge responsibility and obliges the institution to maintain a continuous dialogue with the representatives of industry and the economy.

Dr. also discussed the challenges facing the sector. István Czímer, head of the Construction Authority Department of the Ministry of National Defense, representing the Minister of National Defense. It is urgent to find timeless and sustainable solutions to the difficulties of the present age as soon as possible. On behalf of Pál Réthy, Deputy Secretary of State for Public Employment and Water Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior, Zoltán Kling, head of department at the Ministry of the Interior, said: flood and inland water protection, water supply, and water purification facilities all require special knowledge from specialists involved in both planning and construction.

Regarding the investment framework law before the parliament, Deputy Minister Nándor Csepreghy, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Transport, said: “We are introducing a new procedure in the field of public investments, according to which we must build more instead of less, it is not possible to build without valid licensing and construction plans, there is no construction at least Without 2-3 public procurement offers, and we take into account not only the bid cost of the construction, but also the maintenance costs.”

He was active in the association for more than 22 years. He took a particularly active role in stabilizing the financial situation of the association with his organizational work.
