Hungary may be banned from EU presidency

Members of the European Parliament have prepared a resolution.

A year later, in July 2024, Hungary should lead the EU Council for six months. However, the European Parliament can prohibit this state from presiding over the European Union.

The corresponding draft resolution has already been supported by the three main parties of the European Parliament. And in the near future, next week, deputies of the European Parliament can receive it, Channel 24 reports.

Due to frequent violations of European law, they want to deprive Hungary of the EU presidency on a rotational basis. Thus, given Hungary’s inconsistency with EU law, the values enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty establishing the EU, as well as the principle of sincere cooperation, the resolution “casts doubt on how Hungary will be able to reliably fulfill the task of shaping the negotiations on EU laws in 2024.”

The resolution also accuses the Fidesz government of systemic corruption and “condemns the Hungarian government’s communication campaigns against the EU, which are part of the government’s strategy to de-emphasize its failure to uphold the values enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union.”

In this regard, the resolution called on the governments of the European Union to “find an appropriate solution as soon as possible.” It also reminds that “the European Parliament can take appropriate measures if such a solution is not found.”
