During the eruption, ash spewed out to a height of almost two kilometers, and local authorities therefore closed the airport in the city of Manado. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AP agency.

Covered in ash

Indonesia’s Geological Survey subsequently raised the alert for volcanic activity on the island of Sulawesi to the highest level, urging people to stay at least six kilometers away from the volcano’s crater.

Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manada is about 95 kilometers from Ruang Volcano. It was closed due to reduced visibility and the danger posed by volcanic ash to aircraft jet engines.

Ash covered towns and villages around the volcano, including Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province, home to more than 430,000 people.

Tsunami concerns

The Ruang volcano last erupted on April 17, when the Indonesian authorities evacuated more than 11,000 people. There were also fears that a larger eruption could cause part of the volcano to collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami. The Indonesian Geological Survey warned against this scenario even after the latest eruption.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago and seismic and volcanic activity is quite common here. It is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet and which stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia to the Pacific Basin. With an altitude of 725 meters, Ruang is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
