During a teleconference, Dmitry Peskov argued that blowing up the dam in Nowa Kakhovka was a deliberate action by Ukraine to divert attention from the weakening counteroffensive. He also categorically opposed accusations of Moscow destroying the dam.

On Tuesday, June 6, the Ukrainian authorities announced that the Russians had blown up the dam of the Kakhovskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Dnieper River. The occupiers seized the power plant at the beginning of full-scale aggression. Later, in October last year, the dam was mined by them. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly expressed concern that the dam could be blown up to cause flooding in the surrounding towns.

After the Ukrainian side provided information about the destruction of the dam in Nowa Kakhovka by the Russians, the Kremlin immediately objected to this information. Then, however, the narrative was changed and the blame was placed on the Ukrainian army, which deliberately fired on the dam. Among other things, he spoke about Vladimir Putin’s spokesman. Dmitry Peskov, during a teleconference, accused Kiev of deliberately blowing up the dam in order to divert attention from the allegedly weakening counter-offensive against Russia. The destruction of the dam was also supposed to deprive Russia-controlled Crimea of ​​the water it receives from the reservoir through the North Crimean Canal.

Asked by journalists about Ukrainian allegations against Moscow regarding the destruction of the dam, a Kremlin spokesman replied that they should be “resolutely rejected”. Here we can announce deliberate sabotage on the part of Ukraine, which may lead to serious consequences for tens of thousands of residents of the Kherson region, emphasized the spokesman quoted by ura.news. Despite the aforementioned serious consequences of the destruction of the dam, Peskov assured that the accumulated water reserves are sufficient to supply the peninsula with it.

Zakharova about alleged Ukrainian plans to blow up the dam

Peskov’s narrative on Ukrainian sabotage is supported by, among others, by the press secretary of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova. On Tuesday, the politician famous for her propaganda statements on her Telegram channel shared a letter from Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenz, to the UN Secretary-General, in which he outlined the intentions of the “Ukrainian regime” to destroy the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. “Question to the UN Secretary-General: What has been done?” – Zakharova wrote on social media.
