A 44-year-old man from Maramureş was arrested on Thursday, being suspected of repeatedly beating a dog he owned. The animal was taken over by the authorities. This is the first case in Maramureş county in which a person ends up in custody for crimes provided by the animal protection legislation.

The 44-year-old man, from Baia Mare, came to the attention of the police after they were informed that in a building on Petru Rareş Street in the municipality, the howling of a dog that seems to be mistreated is periodically heard. The police found that the man had a mixed-breed dog that he regularly tortured.

Initially, the owner of the animal was detained. On Thursday, in his name, the magistrates at the Baia Mare Court issued a preventive arrest warrant for 30 days for the torture of animals, an act criminalized by Law no. 205 of 2004 on Animal Protection.

This is the first case in Maramureş county in which a person ends up in preventive detention for animal cruelty.

The Office for Animal Protection issued an order for the dog to be placed in a shelter, and it was handed over to an animal protection association, according to News.ro.

“The police officers of the Animal Protection Office draw the attention of all animal owners regarding the obligations they must comply with, to behave without brutality towards animals, to ensure the basic conditions necessary for the purpose for which they are raised and to do not abandon and/or expel them. According to the law, the application of ill-treatment and cruelty to animals is prohibited, as provided for in Law no. 205 of 2004 on Animal Protection. In case you witness the commission of such acts, notify the Maramureş police immediately, in order to take the necessary legal measures”, reports the Maramureş Police on Thursday evening.
