Panic in Crimea. The leader of pro-Russian terrorists is afraid that Putin’s army will not defend the peninsula

World news

British intelligence reveals growing unrest in Crimea. The leader of Russian-occupied Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, is developing paramilitary units because he is likely to fear that a regular Russian army would be unable to defend the peninsula, the British Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The daily intelligence update indicated that Russia has seen a proliferation of paramilitary groups from its regular armed forces over at least the last 20 years, but this “paramilitarization” has dramatically accelerated since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and is particularly important in the Crimean peninsula.

It added that Aksyonov played a key role in the creation of several local units that often refer to the Cossack tradition, and most of them were given the semi-official status of reserve units of the regular army.

Aksyonov probably wants to build up his patriotic credentials by recruiting fighters, but he is also likely concerned about the ability of the regular army to defend the peninsula. The main element of the Russian garrison, the 22nd Army Corps, is now mostly deployed off the peninsula and has suffered heavy casualties.
