Pathé’s last mistake

The cinema company Pathé closes the Küchlin and lets its audience down. That would never have happened to Spiderman!

Anticipation, pre-reservation, the website of Pathé Küchlein called up, then the crash: “Oops, wrong room” is the gibberish of the company, which is withdrawing from Steinen almost a month earlier than announced and is having the furniture sold off on Monday. The background image is the corridor from «The Shining»: a terrifying end.

One would have wanted to say a proper goodbye to Kiechli with “Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse”, the sequel to a great film about letting go – of one’s own childhood, fear of failure and sticky spider threads, always in the hope of finding a new one , next stop.

It is now also a matter of letting go of one’s own memories of the very first film in the Küchlin cinema («1001 Dalmatians»), which had to be painted over with oil pastel in order to process what had been seen («the witch!»). Letting go of the seductive power of your own world, which shone neon brightly towards you, with all its promises and dark forebodings.

Letting go of the memory of a time when you reviewed films for newspapers and came to Küchlin at lunchtime or even in the morning with people who had just arrived from Zurich and watched the manager smoke for five fun minutes because the film rolls (!) were late. The strangely uplifting feeling of seeing a film first and with only five other people – which, unfortunately, was increasingly the case outside of media screenings as well.

So therefore: let go of the Küchlin, which is now gone faster than promised. “With power comes responsibility”, we learned that from Spiderman, and Pathé Küchlin, that last fat spider in the once dense network of cinemas in Basel, didn’t notice it. The unworthy farewell – a final mistake.
