In a nationwide raid against suspected supporters of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, raids were carried out in Hamburg, Bremen and Kiel. The search warrants ordered by the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court, which were executed on Wednesday morning with the support of state criminal investigations, served to seize evidence, Liddi Ochtering, spokeswoman for the Hamburg prosecutor’s office, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

In total, according to her, 22 raids were carried out in the north of the earth, 13 of them in Hamburg, 7 in Bremen and 2 in Kiel. “The arrest warrants were not executed,” Ochtering said.

The prosecutor’s office is reportedly investigating a total of 29 suspects. They are accused of supporting IS through donations. They allegedly transferred donations totaling about 16,000 euros to intermediaries, who then sent the money to IS members in the Idlib region of Syria.

Through relevant calls for donations on social media, the defendants knew that the money was intended to ransom IS members from camps and detention centers in Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria, or to support them financially. “In this way, the defendants are alleged to have contributed to the maintenance of ISIS structures and its continued existence,” Ochtering said.

In the course of the nationwide raid, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office arrested a total of seven suspected ISIS supporters – four in North Rhine-Westphalia and one each in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bremen. Men and women – mostly of German nationality – are accused by the country’s main prosecutor’s office of supporting a terrorist organization. In addition, according to the Karlsruhe department, searches took place in Berlin, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
