World news

In one of the rooms of her house in the city of Masyaf, in the countryside of Hama, Rama Ahmed (24 years old) moves between the sewing machine and her simple studio, holding her pens with the lightness of the engineer who made her diploma a painting that she decorated her humble workshop with.

Engineer Rama was able to overcome the obstacle after graduation, the lack of job opportunities and her incompatibility with the fields of study, by learning the profession of sewing, and employing her to be a source of livelihood for her and her family in light of difficult economic conditions that drain everyone’s capabilities.

Rama tells Al-Khobar TV how she began to learn sewing by reading and researching foreign references, especially with regard to drawing a “patron”, which is drawing a paper model of the design in the correct sizes, and employing what she learned during her study of chemical engineering in terms of engineering drawing in mastering the drawing easily, then moving on to the application of “patterns”. “Basic on Canvas.”

Rama said, “The obsession with what life will look like after graduation was the biggest motive behind seeking to think seriously about learning a profession that represents me, as I tended to think creatively away from stereotypes, and from here I chose the field of fashion design and began learning the basics of sewing.”

Ahmed added: “The idea of loving drawing and design with good planning and knowledge of the field of sewing turned into an experimental project or a miniature model of a workshop as a result of the accumulation of knowledge that created the ability to innovate designs and mix ideas to reach new designs.”

And Rama continued to Al-Khobar TV: “I do not see the sewing project far from engineering, as it, on the industrial level, needs to enumerate and arrange the stages in an optimal manner and save time and effort to obtain a final product, and this is what I learned well during my studies and I seek to apply it in the future.”

Regarding the obstacles she faced when starting the implementation of her project, Rama indicated that they are summarized in the sharp rise in the prices of fabrics and industrial machines, which were and still are the biggest suffering so far.

Rama indicated that her family was the first and main supporter in the implementation of this project through financial support, and with the help of her mother in her work as well.

Rama indicated that her field of work includes women’s clothing and girls’ clothing, and that after more than a year has passed since the launch of her project, she aims to achieve a wider production than the narrow local scale and reach the largest number of people, especially those who love excellence and originality.

It is worth noting that most of the graduates of Syrian universities, especially engineering colleges, suffer from a lack of suitable job opportunities for their field of study and the delay in their appointment to official jobs.
