Russia is probably building a new military airport on the Ukraine border

World news

Using satellite images, an Osint account has discovered a new airfield on the Ukrainian border. The exact purpose of the square is still unclear.

Russia is apparently building a new airfield near the Ukrainian border. This is reported by the news site “ntv.de”, citing the Osint-X (Open Source Intelligence) account “Redintelpanda”. Accordingly, the facility is located about nine kilometers west of the village of Alexeyevka, about 70 kilometers from Ukraine. There is a logistics center for Russian military units nearby.

According to the account, the leveling work for the runway was largely completed at the beginning of winter, and the road to the location was supposed to have been completed in July 2023. After the thaw in the winter, the work was then resumed, according to “Redintelpanda”. On April 27, the runway was provided with a base course or paving surface. The account relies on satellite images taken at the respective times.

The exact purpose is still unclear

According to the analysis of these images, the runway measures around 1,800 meters and can therefore be used by different types of aircraft. Since the village of Alexeyevka is located in a no-fly zone for civilian aircraft, it can be assumed that the airport will be used for military purposes after its completion, according to the Osint account.

It is still unclear exactly what military purpose the runway could serve. According to Redintelpanda, it could serve as an alternative location for Russian helicopters from the Rowenki base, which is located directly on the border with Ukraine. However, there is also the possibility that the airport is intended as a hub for supply flights. Among other things, fuel is stored in Alexeyevka, and there is already a railway line for fuel supply.
