Crimea has long been part of Ukraine, which, even while remaining part of the USSR, was a founding state of the United Nations. This was recalled in a television interview by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Answering questions about military assistance to Ukraine, Scholz said that “Crimea has been a part of Ukraine for a very, very long time,” and stressed that it was precisely “solving the problem” with the occupation of the peninsula that could be decisive for ending the war.
He also recalled that even in the Soviet era, Ukraine was an influential state enough to become one of the founders of the UN.
Scholz also explained Germany’s attitude to Ukraine’s use of military aid from the West.
“We have transferred a lot of tanks and we will continue to do so,” he said. The Chancellor also stressed that Germany would continue to train the Ukrainian military and provide assistance in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, including the IRIS-T system.
However, at the same time, Scholz noted, “we do not want the weapons that we supply to fall into the territory of Russia.”
