Shaykha Moza bint Nasser: who is the Sheikha influencer at the Jordanian royal wedding

World news

Moza bint Nasser she is a tenacious and intelligent businesswoman, a fashion enthusiast and an influencer with more than a million followers on Instagram. She nearly stole the show from Queen Rania at Crown Prince Hussein’s wedding on June 1. The Qatari “shaykha” is a really interesting character with very clear ideas.

The “shaykha”

Moza bint Nasser stood out at the wedding of the princes Hussein and Rajwa. To tell the truth, it was difficult not to see her: her style choices are not only always spot on, but the “shaykha” always manages to personalize them, making herself very recognizable even among hundreds of crowned heads. Moza graduated from Qatar University with a degree in Sociology in 1986 and in 1977 she became the second wife of Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who was the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013.

For this reason, she is entitled to the honorific title of “shaykha”, feminine of “shaykh” (sheikh, we say in Italian). Literally this word means “elder”, but in the Islamic and pre-Islamic world it was also used to refer to an authority (for example a tribal chief), since the elderly is the one who knows the customs, the law best and has more experience. By now the title no longer takes into account the chronological age. Moza bore seven children to her husband, including the current emir, Tamim bin Hamad al Thani. This makes her very powerful within the Qatari royal dynasty, even though Hamad abdicated in favor of her son.

There are not many Middle Eastern princesses and queens who have distinguished themselves in their public, social and political commitment in favor of their country. Moza bint Nasser, on the other hand, chose not to remain closed within the walls of the Palace and managed to become one of the 100 most powerful women in the world according to Forbes. To better understand what kind of person Moza is, we can recall what the former emir said about her to Time: “When we have to talk I go to his office, because my wife is always busy”. Moza bint Nasser has an important and heavy family past: she is the daughter of Nasser bin Abdullah al-Missned, opponent of the emir Ahmad bin Ali Al Thani (emir from 1960 to 1972). Nasser paid for his activism with prison and exile to Kuwait in 1964 (from which he returned when he married Moza).

An infallible nose for fashion (and business)

The “shaykha” is 63 years old and is the honorary president of the Fashion Trust Arabia, the foundation that deals with the international promotion of Arab and Islamic fashion. Her taste in fashion has made her famous all over the world. When we imagine Moza bin Nasser, the first thing that comes to mind is the turban that makes her so recognizable and that she uses as a sort of hijab. She also stood out at Hussein’s wedding in Jordan.

For the occasion, the “shaykha” chose two items of Valentine: the first, worn for the ceremony, is an autumn-winter 1989 coat, inspired by the work of architect Joseph Hoffman (originally the garment was white, but Moza sported a pink version). The second acid green, chosen for the reception, comes from the autumn-winter 2021 collection. It should also be noted that he did not wear the tiara for the banquet, however he wore a Boghossian emerald and diamond belt around his waist.

It is certainly no coincidence that Moza chose the Italian maison: the shares of Valentino Garavani’s company were purchased in 2012 by the sovereign wealth fund Mayhoola for Investments (and in 2016 the Balmain brand was also acquired). Operations carried out, apparently, on the advice of “shaykha”.

Moza would have created her own style and the result is excellent. In this regard, Vanity Fair recalls a sentence of hers that leaves no room for interpretation: “I don’t have a stylist because I wouldn’t find anyone who understands what I want”. In fact, she has the enviable ability to balance, on the fine line of elegance, her will with the dictates of islamic fashion (no slits or necklines, so to speak).

The “shaykha” is not only passionate about fashion. It seems that she also promoted the founding of the channel “Al Jazeera”, in 1996, which in just a few years has become the hub of information throughout the Arab-Islamic world. Moza has also created Education City, the university center near Doha, hospitals and museums.

Like Ava Gardner

Stylist Stephane Rolland said of her: “It is the Arab world’s answer to Ava Gardner”. In fact, the “shaykha” is also in the ranking of the most beautiful women in the world. Just her charm and her elegance are the best calling card for Qatar, a rather controversial nation as regards respect for human rights.

SkyTg24 recalls a statement by Moza bint Nasser regarding his reference models: “My father, my husband and Egyptian President Nasser”. He admitted there wasn’t “no woman” in the list. It would be nice, however, if she were to become an example without shadows for Muslim women, if she succeeded with her determination and her influence to improve the condition of women in Qatar (and beyond). Moza acts from a privileged position and this increases her power. Her word has weight, but this could and should become, from an exception (although not rare), a rule.
