South Korea increases aid to Ukraine

World news

South Korean President Jun Suk Jeol announced in Kiev an increase in aid to Ukraine this year. During a press conference with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, President Jun stated that the value of support this year would amount to USD 150 million.

Jun Suk Jeol mentioned that South Korea had supplied bulletproof vests, helmets, and necessary ammunition last year. Now he believes that this year’s aid will be much larger. He also added that South Korea continues to support Ukraine in demining the country. Last year, the South Korean government provided USD 100 million to support Ukraine, and this year the amount of support will be USD 150 million.

The president compared the situation of Ukraine, fighting against Russian aggression, to his own country in 1950, which was attacked by North Korean troops. He noted that at that time the Republic of South Korea was in danger of ceasing to exist as a state, but thanks to the resistance of the army and civilians, the aggression was repulsed.

South Korea has been supplying Ukraine with humanitarian aid and other supplies, but has so far opted not to supply lethal weapons. The refusal to supply arms stems from the principle of non-involvement in armed conflict and concerns about economic relations with Russia and potential increased cooperation between Russia and North Korea, as commentators have suggested.
