Jelena Ostapenko defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 clay court tournament in Rome. In the semi-finals, the tennis player from Latvia will face Iga Świątek or Jelena Rybakina. The Polish woman will face Kazaszka on Wednesday evening.
Świątek is fighting for a third successive triumph in Rome. The record holder of the event in this respect is the Spaniard Conchita Martinez, who won four times in the years 1993-96.
The charge of coach Tomasz Wiktorowski has an unfavorable balance of matches with Rybakina. She defeated her two years ago in Ostrava, but this year she lost twice – in the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open and in the semi-finals in Indian Wells. However, they will meet on clay for the first time.
However, Świątek never won against Ostapenko. The Latvian has succumbed three times, but she has not yet faced her on the clay court.
The match of Świątek – Rybakina will not start before 21.00.
