Searches and detentions are taking place throughout Belarus today, the Viasna human rights center reported. The actions of KGB officers are aimed at the relatives of political prisoners and people who have already been convicted in political cases. At least 24 people are known to have been detained.
“We have information that such visits are taking place throughout the country,” Wiasna said on Tuesday in the Telegram messenger.
Among those detained are former political prisoners who were released but remained in Belarus.
Wiasna said that KGB officers had warrants regarding articles related to “financing of extremist activities” and “participation in extremist formations.” The Belarusian authorities consider, among others, the financing of extremist activities. donations to civic organizations they deemed “extremist.”
There are currently 1,415 political prisoners in Belarus, Viasna reminds.
