Junko Tabei was 35 years old and had a lot of climbing experience when, on May 16, 1975, she became the first woman to reach the top of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. She went to Everest as part of a fifteen-woman expedition, financed by Japanese newspapers and television.
