It was declared early on Friday across Ukraine alert due to Russian missile attacks and a few hours after the attack, it was lifted for most of the country, including the capital city of Kyiv. Kyiv authorities previously reported that there were two separate series of attacks. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said that no calls to rescue services were recorded. Since the beginning of May, Russia has carried out about twenty missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Course of events:
7:38 – Ukrainian forces shelled a village in the western Russian region of Bryansk, setting fire to the house, but no one was injured, regional governor Alexander Bogomaz said in a post on the Telegram messaging app on Friday. Neither Reuters nor the Guardian could confirm the reported attack on the village of Lomakovka, which is located near the border with Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. Russian officials reported intensified attacks from northern Ukraine and said Ukrainian troops attempted to cross the border into the Belgorod region on Thursday, the first such incursion. Ukraine denies that its military is involved in the incursions and says they are being carried out by Russian volunteer fighters. More than 2,500 people were evacuated from the area.
7:21 – The Institute for the Study of War reported that the pro-Ukrainian Russian volunteer corps and the Legions of Freedom of Russia yesterday they allegedly performed another operation in Belgorod. Geolocated footage shows the latter group operating near Nova Tavolzhanka in Russia, with both groups attacking Russian positions near that settlement and Shebekin (also in Belgorod Oblast).
The Russian Defense Ministry said that officers of the Russian Border Service and the Federal Security Service stopped two companies of motorized infantry reinforced with tanks that tried to “invade” Russian territory near Shebekin and Nova Tavolzhanka.
ISW points out that these operations are small-scale attacks that involve a quick entry into enemy territory with a specific objective and then a planned withdrawal without an effort to establish long-term control.

6:17 – The Kyiv Independent reports that the drones were shot down over the city of Kursk, in western Russia.
Kursk Oblast Governor Roman Starovoyt said in a Telegram post that the drones were intercepted during the night.
6:05 – Ukraine says it is during the night shot down more than 30 missiles and drones which Russia fired towards Kiev.
Writing on Telegram, Kyiv military authorities said: “According to preliminary information, more than 30 air targets of various types were detected and destroyed in the airspace above and around Kyiv by air defense forces.”

Ahead of an expected Ukrainian counteroffensive in the more than 15-month-old war, Russia has been the target of attacks in recent days, including a cross-border incursion and a drone attack on Moscow. Last week, pro-Ukrainian forces briefly seized settlements in Russia’s Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine.
Russia’s defense ministry said it repelled three cross-border attacks on Thursday near the city of Shebekin and accused Ukraine of using “terrorist formations” to attempt to attack Russian civilians. Ukraine claims that the incursions into Belgorod have nothing to do with its army and that they are being carried out by Russian volunteers.
